Visiting the Dordogne in France should be on everyone’s list. When it comes to food, France is one of my favourite countries in Europe. The Dordogne has so many delicious goods, like the croissants, macarons, cheese and wine. Every region in France is famous for its own speciality. Here’s why you should visit the Dordogne:
Visiting the Dordogne in France
A few years back, my family bought a house in the Dordogne. I had the chance to visit the Dordogne before until my brother and I tagged along for a visit.
Turns out, I absolutely love it here! The house is in a rural part of France surrounded by fields and hills. In the nearby towns, they have delicious fresh food on the farmers’ markets. And I adore the adventures here.
When it comes to food, I try to eat healthily and to be conscious of what I put in my body. But here, they have my guilty pleasures everywhere!
Fresh, Delicious, Smelly Cheese
Starting with my number 1: cheese!
Made from sheep milk, cow milk, it doesn’t matter. Love it all!
Famous cheeses from the Dordogne are Trappe d’Echourgnac, Le Bleu de Causses, Ossau Iraty, Laguiole and my favourite, Rocamadour.
Turns out the farmer next door produces amazing cheeses. We bumped into him at the farmers’ market. Of course, I bought some.
Wine and liquor from the Dordogne
The river Dordogne made the area around Bergerac a great place to grow grapes. Bergerac has popular wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
Vin de Noix is a popular local liquor made from the walnut from this region. You can actually visit the distillery, Distillerie Denoix, to check it out and pick up a bottle.
Different meat specialities
The Dordogne is famous for their Limousin cows, foie gras, confit de canard and the Périgord lamb. The meat of the lambs and cows have a high quality and is sold all over the world.
The foie gras is a delicacy from the Périgord region. The fat livers of geese are sold as a whole or as a pâté. Confit de canard used to be one of my favourites when I was younger. They cook duck legs in fat and salt until the meat is flaky. You can buy it in tins in just about every French supermarket.
French walnuts & truffles
The walnut is the nut in the Dordogne. They might be a tad smaller, but with even more flavour. The French do everything with them, coat them in praline, use it in nougat or press them for oil.
Between December and mid-March is the hunt for the black gold, truffles. Most tourists won’t even know, because they only visit in Summer when there are none anymore. Such a shame. They miss out on the lovely dishes and dessert made with black truffle.
I can’t wait to go back with my family. The house and the surrounding land have a serene touch to it. It makes you small and humble. Also, I love the outdoors!
